Which Owls will use boxes?

Barn and Tawny owls will readily take to boxes in areas where there is sufficient food to sustain the family. Little owls will also use nest boxes but because of their small size, they find it easier to find holes and crevices big enough to home their families.

Siting your nest box

To give the best chance of success, your nest box should be sited by November, although there are no guarantees that your box will be used in the next breeding year. Barn owl nest boxes should be located on isolated farmland trees or on the edge of a wooded area, overlooking open land. Tawny owl nest boxes however should be located within the woodland. All species need to be able to see the hunting grounds and require a clear flight path to and from the box.

Boxes should ideally be placed around 15 feet high (to avoid vandalism) and face south-east, but more importantly, away from prevailing wind and rain. It is important that the owls can see the hole in the nest box.

Here's another

Photo's of nest boxes that you've built

Hi Bob,

We visited Centre Parcs a few months ago and you have very kindly put a photo of my little boy on your website.

I said at the time that I wanted to make a Barn Owl nest box and so downloaded the plans off your website and got to work. I have now completed the box and fixed it on the end of my garage. You said you would like to see the finished item so have attached the photos.

Possibly not the best place, but it is quite high and has a reasonable flight path.

 Hope you like it.

 Regards

 Juls
