Which Owls will use boxes? Barn and Tawny owls will readily take to boxes in areas where there is sufficient food to sustain the family. Little owls will also use nest boxes but because of their small size, they find it easier to find holes and crevices big enough to home their families. Siting your nest box To give the best chance of success, your nest box should be sited by November, although there are no guarantees that your box will be used in the next breeding year. Barn owl nest boxes should be located on isolated farmland trees or on the edge of a wooded area, overlooking open land. Tawny owl nest boxes however should be located within the woodland. All species need to be able to see the hunting grounds and require a clear flight path to and from the box. Boxes should ideally be placed around 15 feet high (to avoid vandalism) and face south-east, but more importantly, away from prevailing wind and rain. It is important that the owls can see the hole in the nest box.
